Spicy Bacon Wrapped Pretzel Rods

Bacon Wrapped Around Pretzels and Baked

If you’re looking for a simple bacon wrapped snack, it doesn’t get any simpler than bacon wrapped pretzels.  And since salty, crunchy, savory foods pair well with a little spice kick, these go great with a some chili powder and cayenne.

As with most bacon snacks, this was intended for a party, not necessarily something I was leaving out for my kids to snack on.

And not just any party.  An annual Baconfest.  Even though I didn’t plan on this being an award winner, I was hoping that it would at least all be eaten.  If you’re curious, my past award winning recipe was one of the first recipes on the blog, the glorious Bacon Weave.

How to Wrap Pretzel Rods with Bacon

Start with a bag of thick pretzel rods, the long log ones.  You’ll have a lot leftover if you only use one pound of bacon.  That shouldn’t be an issue, unless you don’t like pretzels.

Next, you’ll want a pound of thin slices bacon.  Thick bacon just doesn’t work right, and there isn’t enough.  One pound should yield around 16-18 pretzel rods.  So grab two pounds if you want a really big batch that will use most of the pretzels.

Mix up your bacon coating and pour it into a long dish the length of your bacon.  This way you can dip the bacon, roll it on the pretzel and then roll it again.

Making them is actually very straightforward.  Start by wrapping the bacon around the pretzel at about a 45 degree angle, overlapping by about 25%.  Make it pretty snug and it should leave about an inch at the end for holding.

Bake them in the oven on a wire rack until the bacon is cooked thoroughly an the sugar caramelizes.

And then try and find someone who can’t resist a sweet, crunchy, little smokey, little spicy bacon wrapped snack!
